IOM Report

Our nation's progress against the tobacco epidemic is at risk. What do we need to propel the country forward to continue to reduce tobacco use?

To answer this question, the American Legacy Foundation asked the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies (IOM) to conduct a major study of tobacco policy in the United States.  The IOM report, Ending the Tobacco Problem: A Blueprint for the Nation, maps out an aggressive, long-term strategy “to set the nation irreversibly” on course to end our nation’s tobacco epidemic.  The report recommends strengthening strategies that effectively reduce and prevent smoking in combination with changing the regulatory and policy landscape.

Legacy is dedicated to building a world where young people reject tobacco and anyone can quit. The IOM report provides a comprehensive blueprint for building such a world, including recommendations to support effective media campaigns for smoking prevention and cessation.

The IOM report sets forth a challenging set of recommendations to increase the momentum of our nation’s tobacco control efforts.  The recommendations identify steps for the public and private sectors at the local, state and national levels. The report compels all of us – the public health community, governments, schools, nonprofit organizations – to rise to the challenge of addressing one of our nation’s leading health imperatives.  To find out more, click on the links below.
