AMERICAN LEGACY FOUNDATION® NAMES STEPHENIE FOSTER SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT FOR GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS

3/6/2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. The American Legacy Foundation, the largest national public health foundation dedicated to keeping youth from smoking and providing resources to smokers who want to quit, announced today that Stephenie Foster has been appointed senior vice president for government affairs.

Foster joins the foundation from Georgetown Strategies, where she specialized in advocacy and training both domestically and internationally. Prior to her work at Georgetown Strategies, she served as the Vice President for Public Policy for Planned Parenthood Federation of America, where she directed the organizations’ political and legislative advocacy on reproductive health.

Foster has served as Chief of Staff to two United States Senators; Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) and Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-CT), and was appointed by President Clinton as General Counsel of the U.S. General Services Administration.  In addition, Foster is a Professorial Lecturer at American University in Washington, D.C. where she teaches courses on legislative and policy advocacy.

“Stephenie Foster’s experience and expertise in both the non-profit sector and governmental sectors will be a tremendous asset to the foundation,” said Dr. Cheryl Healton, President of the American Legacy Foundation. “We are thrilled to welcome her to our team as our foundation continues its commitment to reach youth and adults with effective campaigns and programs to reduce the deadly toll of tobacco.”

Stephenie’s role at the foundation will include building on the organization’s prior work to educate key public policy makers on Legacy’s successful efforts to reduce tobacco use and save lives.  She will participate in the development of strategic partnerships with organizations who share the foundation’s mission and work to secure support for and advance Legacy’s goals.

The American Legacy Foundation® is dedicated to building a world where young people reject tobacco and anyone can quit. Located in Washington, D.C., the foundation develops programs that address the health effects of tobacco use, especially among vulnerable populations disproportionately affected by the toll of tobacco, through grants, technical assistance and training, partnerships, youth activism, and counter-marketing and grassroots marketing campaigns. The Foundation’s programs include truth®, a national youth smoking prevention campaign that has been cited as contributing to significant declines in youth smoking; EX®, an innovative public health program designed to speak to smokers in their own language and change the way they approach quitting; research initiatives exploring the causes, consequences and approaches to reducing tobacco use; and a nationally-renowned program of outreach to priority populations. The American Legacy Foundation was created as a result of the November 1998 Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) reached between attorneys general from 46 states, five U.S. territories and the tobacco industry.
